Strategic Plan 2016-2020

Announcement from BALANCE Board of Directors:

The Board of Directors, BALANCE for Blind Adults is pleased to announce that Dr. Deborah Gold has been appointed as the new Executive Director. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Gold who has taken the helm effective April 13, 2016.

Deborah holds a Doctorate in Special Education with a focus on community and social inclusion of persons with disabilities. Deborah was previously National Director, Research and Program Development with CNIB. Over a 15+ year career at CNIB, Deborah’s contributions have included coordinating and developing innovative services for children, youth and their families, as well as numerous research and resource development projects to support clients of all ages. She also published studies on a broad array of topics relating to the lived experiences and needs of people with vision loss; in her most recent role she created a more client-centred intake process and she has provided support to the engagement and consultation of clients in CNIB’s strategic planning activities. She is currently the Canadian representative on the international board of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AERBVI), and holds adjunct professor appointments in the University of Toronto’s Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy, the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry and the University of Western Ontario’s Department of Ophthalmology.

The Board of Directors would also like to take this opportunity to offer its sincere thanks to Ms. Monita O’Connor for her peerless leadership as the interim Executive Director. This time of transition required someone to offer knowledgeable, active and supportive leadership, and Monita delivered all these qualities far beyond our expectations. Monita has indicated an interest in remaining active in the BALANCE community, and we look forward to continuing to work with her in the future.

I hope you will join me and the rest of the Board of Directors in anticipating exciting times ahead for the entire BALANCE community. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I am delighted to extend a warm welcome to Deborah as the new Executive Director of BALANCE for Blind Adults.

Best Regards,
Meena (Dr. Meenakshi Venkatesan), Board Chair
